River Subdivision

Port to Squawbottom

Port is a major terminal between

the Summit and River

Subdivisions. In the early days

before the Summit Subdivision was

complete it served as the eastern

terminus of the Gorre & Daphetid

RR. Not ultimately intended to be

a terminus it has no turntable,

relying instead on a balloon loop

through the harbor to turn motive

power.

A train may depart either way

from Port Union Station on its

journey westward on the River

Subdivision. From Port, it climbs

to Cross Junction where it crosses the Southern Pacific RR's branch from

Great Divide to Gorre, then heads into a tunnel to emerge high up the

slopes of Giant Canyon.

After traveling along the eastern slope of Devil's Gulch, the westbound train

continues up Squawbottom Creek to and through Helengon Gap but its

downhill all the way from Cross Junction to Squawbottom.

Squawbottom to Gorre

From Squawbottom it is uphill

again to Gorre, by first circling

Scalp Mountain on Sims Loop then

traversing Squawbottom Creek in

Devil’s Gulch and passing past

Sowbelly and over Sowbelly Creek.

Gorre is the western terminus of

the Gorre & Daphetid RR. It is a

small village on the Gorre &

Daphetid RR but important as it is

the point of interchange with the

Southern Pacific RR and the Devil’s

Gulch and Helengon narrow gauge

railroad.
